Big Success on January 15

2nd Annual Bocce Ball Frozen Open and

Amazing Chili Cook Off Brrrrrrrrring Out the Best!

Everyone brought their A-game to the Winery on January 15 - bocce ball players and chili makers alike! Congratulations to all the winners in the Walnut Street Winery's 2nd Annual Bocce Ball Frozen Open and Amazing Chili Cook Off! Both events were wildly successful and we thank everyone who came out that day.

According to Frozen Open coordinator Ron Payne, the tournament went off without a hitch and everyone had a great time! We give special thanks to Brett Tacket for providing warming huts. Although it was a beautiful January day, it was still chilly...not quite frozen, but definitely chilly!

Four teams in the Frozen Open finished in the money. Congratulations to Dan Maher's first place team, The Holy Rollers (pictured here, from left: Jeff Winters, Michelle Maher, Dan Maher and Rich Canady). Cary Daugherty's team finished second, Nick Daugherty's team claimed third place and Ken & Cindy's team snagged fourth place.

In our Amazing Chili Cook Off, we had 10 awesome entries. Customers acted as judges, tasting all of the chilis and casting their votes for their favorites. First place was awarded to Larry Shanle of Dawson for his white chicken chili. Joe Gillock of Mount Auburn captured second place with his secret ingredient chili, and Cary Daugherty of Rochester claimed third with his last minute entry. Thanks to all of our competitors: Larry Shanle, Joe Gillock, Cary Daugherty, Jeff Ball, Joe Jones, Mary Gail Veselenak, Loren Shanle, Nancy Kruse and Jerry Jallas.

January was a big month at the Winery. So much for the winter blahs...our customers weren't having any part of that! From great crowds on Open Mic Night to standing room only on live music nights, the Winery was bustling with business, and we want to say THANK YOU to all of our great customers for an oustanding month!

So who is Isabell?

Isabell Makes a Tasty Pizza

If you've enjoyed a tasty pizza in the Winery, you have Isabell to thank for it! Well, not Isabell exactly. She's only 4-years-old and is really just the namesake of this family-run pizza business. But you can thank her parents and grandparents who operate this wholesale pizza business.

In 2009, Isabell's Frozen Pizza opened in Carlinville. This organization specializes in wholesale pizzas and is completely operated by family members. All of the sauces are homemade, including the alfredo, garlic sauce, red sauce and cream sauce.

Sixteen varieties are made and delivered each week to various customers. Different days mean different routes with stops in almost every town between Pekin and Taylorville, and Pana and Breese.

Isabell's offers many of the traditional flavors one comes to expect in a pizza, but they also have a flair for the unusual, including a biscuit and gravy pizza, bacon cheeseburger, philly steak and chicken alfredo.

So, if you haven't treated yourself to an Isabell's Pizza yet, be sure to do so in the very near future. We guarantee that if you try it, you'll like it!

All through the month of February,

enjoy these specials:

$5 off every bottle of

Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio,

Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Rosie Red

There's only one person who's been at the Walnut Street Winery almost as long as the owner himself and that's Liz Robison, hired on the spot just prior to the winery's opening.

In July 2009, Liz responded to a help wanted ad in the Illinois Times...something about a new winery in Rochester needing help. "Why not," she thought. "It would be something new to do and I like wine." Hard to argue with that logic.

She met with winery owner Loren Shanle who asked her to sample various wines and give her opinion of said wines. Apparently her opinions mattered, or at least seemed sound to Loren, and she was hired on the spot. Little did she know what lay ahead for Loren and his newly assembled winery crew.

"It was chaos for the first two and a half months," Liz said. Since this was the first rodeo, so to speak, for all involved, there was a big learning curve. Policies and practices were created and implemented. Mistakes were corrected. Goals were set, met and revised. Victories were celebrated and defeats were learned from. Such as...

"When we first opened, the wine cabinets (where customers sit) didn't have doors on them," Liz recalled. "A lady set her purse on the cabinet but it slid off, catching bottles of wines as it fell to the floor. It emptied three or four cubes of wine." Now, one can imagine the mess that a single broken bottle of wine would make, but dozens of bottles?  Doors were made for the cabinets shortly thereafter.

The biggest change Liz has seen in her tenure at the winery is the movement from selling other's wines to producing and selling only Shanle wines. Customer's growing and insatiable interest in bocce ball has also been fun to watch, she said.

Originally from Tucson, Arizona, Liz has been a Springfield resident for 10 years. She's been a cosmetologist for 17 years, and in 2008, started her own salon, About Your Hair, at the intersection of South Grand Avenue West and Glenwood.

Liz and her 13 year-old-son Alex like attending sporting events together, and took in their first NFL football game last fall. So, she's a full time cosmetologist, part time wine server and a mother to a teenager...is there really such a thing as "spare time" in her realm of existence? Maybe a little, as she does enjoy organic vegetable gardening - including growing a salsa garden - and reading non-fiction.

You can always find Liz at the winery on Thursday night. "That's what I was hired for... always on Thursday and sometime during the weekend," she said.  So the next time you see Liz in the winery, be sure to say "hi". And ask her when her homemade salsa will be ready!
